Dr João Cardoso MD, PhD is the Head Breast Surgeon at the Breast Unit of the Champalimaud Clinical Center, since 2011. Maria João Cardoso holds a PhD in Medicine from University of Porto with the topic of objective evaluation of aesthetic results in breast cancer conservative treatment. Since then most of her research activity is related to this topic and the development of objective ways of evaluating aesthetic results in all forms of breast surgery, using artificial intelligence aiming at a better quality of life for patients with breast cancer. Maria João Cardoso is co-coordinator of the Breast Research group at INESC TEC with Professor Jaime Cardoso. Until 2019, Dr Cardoso, has published more than 100 papers on international journals, corresponding to 5000 citations, h-index 28. She has authored several book chapters. MJ Cardoso has also co-authored around 200 full communications in major international conferences. Dr Cardoso has joined the NOVA MEDICAL SCHOOL as assistant teacher in 2017. She is currently supervising and co-supervising 5 PhD Students. She has actively participated in European and National research projects (PICTURE, BCCT.Plan). She is specialty editor for The Breast. She is a nominated member of the EUSOMA (Europen Society of Mastology) Executive Committee. One of her main interests is promoting the QoL of Breast Cancer Patients and she founded in 2011 a Support Centre for Breast Cancer Patients, the Mama Help. Maria-João Cardoso and Jaime Cardoso (INESC TEC) have been working together for the last 15 years. The Breast research group co-founded by both reunites all the projects that they have been coordinating together. CINDERELLA the most recent joint project consists in the development of objective methods for aesthetic evaluation of breast cancer patients submitted to surgery and radiotherapy, using artificial intelligence (http://vcmi.inesctec.pt/breast/).
